With over 700 jobs created in French startups last December, the year 2023 ends with a calm and stable second half. Over H2 as a whole, nearly 4,200 jobs will have been created, averaging out at nearly 700 per month. December therefore reflects this trend perfectly. By way of comparison, H1 as a whole saw over 20,700 net new jobs created, i.e. an average of almost 3,500 per month. In other words, the last six months of the year were five times less productive than the first six.
This stability is all the more noteworthy in that it reflects the difference between a low number of job creations and deletions. By way of comparison, the December balance is close to that of July, when twice as many jobs were created and eliminated in a market that was much more dynamic at that time. The market is therefore quiet and sluggish as the year draws to a close.
In December, over 1,800 startups created 3,650 jobs, while just as many shed just over 2,900. On average over the second half of the year, just under 1,950 startups created jobs every month, and almost 2,050 shed jobs. However, although slightly fewer in number, startups that create jobs generate more jobs on average than those that shed them.
As we enter the final month of 2023, the vast majority of regions in mainland France are showing a positive balance, albeit close to equilibrium, in terms of job creations. Only Île-de-France easily surpassed the 100 jobs created mark last month.
Unsurprisingly, GreenTech finishes way ahead of the pack as the most job-creating sector for French startups. This sector generated some 5,000 net new jobs in 2023, i.e. almost one in five jobs in French Tech last year. TransportTech and FinTech come second and third respectively in this annual ranking.
