After a “flashing orange” second half, November turns green again

Even if the second half of 2023 looks set to be a quiet one for the startup job market, the month of November currently boasts the best balance of the period, with +1,700 jobs created. In fact, more than half of all jobs created in the first half of the year were created this month (+3,400 jobs). By way of comparison, the entire first half of the year saw over 20,700 net new jobs created. Pending December, the second half of the year is therefore generating six times fewer jobs than the first. Nevertheless, November’s trends are close to 2023 standards and the monthly average of +2,200 jobs created per month.

In the midst of the usual orange hues of this period, the startup job market is adding a little “greenery” to the autumn landscape.

While job creations rose slightly on the previous month (from 4,400 to 4,800), job losses fell more drastically (from 4,300 to 3,000).

In detail, we count over 2,100 start-ups creating jobs, over 1,800 shedding jobs, and over 6,600 stabilizing their workforce. These trends are virtually identical to those observed in September.

This return to green is also reflected in our regional analysis. After an October which saw the vast majority of regions in mainland France approaching a zero balance, they all returned to the green in November (with the exception of Corsica, which shed a single job). Symbolizing this “greening”, the Paris region reactivated its job reactor, with over 1,000 jobs created in start-ups in the region last month.

In this “green” month, what could be more natural than to note the return of GreenTech to first place in the monthly Top Sectors ranking. Startups in this sector alone created over 300 jobs last month. TransporTech came second in the monthly rankings (and 3rd overall for the year), with almost 280 new jobs created. More surprisingly, LegalTech closes the monthly podium, although it does not feature in the Top20 for the year as a whole.
