While the French Tech job market had recorded an initial downturn in April (almost 3,600 jobs lost), hiring in French startups picked up again in May, with over 8,000 jobs created.
This rebound is based above all on a general increase in the number of startups creating jobs: nearly 3,300 of them recruited in May. On a sample basis, nearly one startup in three created at least one job last month. This is also true of the scaleups in the French Tech 120. Among the latter, 85% recruited in May.
This general trend can also be seen in the regions. Last month, all regions of France once again generated new jobs. TheIle-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions continue to lead the way, with over 4,500 and almost 750 jobs created respectively. The Ile-de-France region is once again leading the way, accounting for almost 57% of new hires nationwide.
Sector analysis also reveals this upward trend: with a few exceptions (Retail, SportTech, etc.), the main tech sectors have created jobs. CleanTech comes out on top with nearly 1,300 jobs created.
These numerous monthly variations mean that employment in start-ups is a volatile market, in constant motion. The French Tech sector has shown resilience since the start of the year, despite a contraction in private funding and an uncertain international context. Even with the loss of more than 3,500 jobs last month, the balance remains largely positive, with nearly 13,000 jobs in cumulative terms since January. From May 2022 to May 2023, ten months out of twelve have created jobs. Over one year, French Tech has thus created more than 31,300 jobs in total.
It remains to be seen where order books stand. Will they be able to reassure investors sufficiently to maintain hiring momentum and boost investment in the second half?
We look forward to seeing you at the beginning of July for the June barometer. We’ll then be able to compare job creation in French Tech startups with the results of Numeum’s half-yearly study of the digital services and software market, to be published at the same time.
