It’s been a quiet summer for employment in French Tech startups. With just over 1,500 new jobs created in July, there were fewer than 200 net creations in August. Since the start of the year, French startups have thus generated eight consecutive months of job growth and over 15,000 net creations (4.6% growth in total).
While there’s no cause for alarm just yet, a clear slowdown seems to have set in since April. Is this simply a summer lull, or is it a real trend that’s beginning to take hold?
It should be remembered that the balance for the summer of 2024 (almost 1,700 net new jobs) remains better than that recorded for the same period in 2023 (almost 200 jobs lost).
However, the summer of 2023 also marked the start of a second half-year that turned out to be very quiet for startup employment in France. In fact, the last six months of 2023 were five times less productive than the first six months.
In detail, we note that :
- Since April, job creation has fallen by 40%, while layoffs have risen by 16%;
- For the first time in 2024, more startups are cutting jobs than creating them.
This point of attention is also confirmed in the regional analysis. This summer, several regions slipped into the red, particularly in August. This is particularly true of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Usually the region’s second-largest employer after Île-de-France, this is the region that shed the most jobs in August.
In terms of sector analysis, our TOP job-creation sectors podium exceeded some symbolic milestones over the summer. GreenTech and industrial startups were the only sectors to pass the 3,000 mark for the year. TransportTech reached the 2,000 mark.
Will September confirm this trend?
We look forward to seeing you at https://barometrestartups.fr/ in early October!
