With over 400 net new jobs created in July, and a decline of 600 jobs in August, employment in French startups showed a near-zero balance over the summer period.
Yet this stability is only apparent. On closer inspection, the French Tech job market is characterized bymajor fluctuations. Here’s how.
In July and August combined, 1,800 startups created 5,000 new jobs, while 2,200 startups shed 5,000. Some 6,600 startups maintained their workforce. This relative stability is the result of the strongest job movements, particularly in July, since the creation of this barometer.
Our territorial analysis also calls this “false flat” feeling into question. Whereas all regions of mainland France (with the exception of three) were slightly ahead in terms of job creation in July, all these regions (with the exception of two) were slightly behind in terms of job losses in August. This reversal is particularly noticeable in the PACA region , which had created over 250 jobs in July, only to shed around 50 the following month.
An atypical summer trend also seems to have been confirmed in August: theIle-de-France and Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regions no longer play their role as employment “locomotives”. On the contrary, it was even the regional employment areas that suffered the most this summer. Over 250 jobs were lost in the Île-de-France region, and more than 120 in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
When it comes to analyzing the “Top sectors” of French Tech, four sectors seem to have come out on top during the summer break. The GreenTech sector has been the undisputed leader for many months(+300 jobs this summer), followed by FinTech(+350 jobs) and TransportTech (nearly 150 jobs). More surprisingly, FashionTech also made it into the Top10 this summer, with a net creation of over 200 jobs over the two months.
While the job market in French startups may have seemed to be progressing on a sea of oil this summer, this should not conceal a growing number of “diversification currents”. It remains resilient(+20,500 jobs created since January) and dynamic, but recent results demonstrate the existence of a shifting, diversified ecosystem. Gathered under the same banner of “French Tech”, French startups are showing greater diversity every month, synonymous with their richness!
