As part of a program to promote digital professions and training for 2022, Numeum, Opco Atlas and the FondationFemmes@Numérique have produced videos to make digital professions and training more attractive to young girls.

Breaking the codes: episode 1

Digital is not for girls!

56% of female high school students are interested in careers in the digital and IT sectors, yet less than a third take the Numerics and Computer Sciences (NSI) specialization at high school.

These figures are mirrored in employment, where only 28% of digital workers are women.

Numeum is working with its partners to change this trend and promote the digital professions to young girls, from an early age.

Digital isn't green!

The digital sector is responsible for around 4% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, so we need to build a greener digital future by extending the lifespan of our digital devices and changing the way we use them.

However, digital technology also appears to be a solution to the environmental transition: for example, it :

  • contributes to energy efficiency (e.g.: creation of computing centers to support innovation and reduce energy consumption in industry),
  • reduces the need to travel (e.g. telecommuting),
  • promotes more rational use of natural resources (e.g. measuring tools),
  • makes it easier to measure and monitor environmental impacts (e.g. carbon impact scoring tools),
  • or the emergence of business models based on the principles of the circular economy (e.g. reuse platforms).

Faced with this twofold transition, new professions are emerging, and many new prospects are opening up for all of us!

Digital is not inclusive!

While diversity in the digital professions raises a fundamental issue of equal access to employment and therefore fundamental rights, it is also synonymous with performance for companies.

These are the findings of numerous studies, notably the Delivering Through Diversity Report by McKinsey, which shows that companies where diversity is a reality are up to 35% more likely to outperform their competitors. These conclusions apply all the more to the digital sector, which has been experiencing a shortage of employees for several years, even though needs are constantly growing.

According to the European Commission, the shortage of digital workers in Europe will reach 756,000 by 2020, and in France, nearly 200,000 positions will need to be filled by 2022, according to France Stratégie. As a result, the under-representation of certain profiles (low-level qualifications, women, disabled people, etc.) in the digital sector is becoming an obstacle to the sector’s development and growth.

Numeum works to promote diversity in the digital sector, targeting different audiences: women, young people, jobseekers, employees and people with disabilities.
