At a time when the “France 2030” plan, endowed with 54 billion euros over 5 years, aims to develop industrial competitiveness and the technologies of the future,Numeum, the leading organization representing the digital ecosystem in France, publishes the first edition of its annual barometer of innovation and R&D financing, in partnership with AYMING.

While the signal is positive, with 58% of companies describing innovation in France as “easy”, they still encounter recurring difficulties in obtaining public or private funding.

Innovation and skills play a key role in stimulating business growth and ensuring long-term competitiveness: in this context, 94% of companies surveyed said they frequently or occasionally innovate their products and/or services.

Simplify and clarify systems to give companies the means to innovate

Numeum and AYMING observe that the main factors holding back innovation in French companies are financial or market-related, not technological.

Indeed, while 52% of companies claim that financial resources are an obstacle to innovation, only 30% consider it easy to obtain private funding. At the same time, access to public funding is still mainly available to large companies. Nearly one in two VSE/SMEs (49%) use the Innovation Tax Credit.

With this in mind, Numeum is calling on public authorities and ecosystem players to continue their efforts to make the financing of innovation and R&D more visible and easier to understand, as it is still too complex for some. At the same time, Numeum is working specifically to raise awareness among small and medium-sized businesses to stimulate a culture of innovation, a key competitive issue.

“The results of this survey today show that the environment for our companies is not as easy and serene as it could be. The majority of companies feel that the lack of financial resources is an obstacle to the development of their innovations, and the system remains complex in terms of private and public funding, particularly for smaller companies. Numeum will be making concrete proposals on this subject to the public authorities and its ecosystem, continuing its strong commitment to digital companies and innovation.
