On February 23, Barbara Pompili, Minister for Ecological Transition, and Cedric O, Secretary of State for the Digital Economy and Electronic Communications, presented the government’s “Digital and the Environment” roadmap, with the aim of improving knowledge of the various impacts of digital technology on the environment, controlling these impacts and harnessing innovation to support the ecological transition.

This roadmap has been the fruit of a great deal of work, and was announced at the “Numérique et Environnement” conference on October 8, during which Planet Tech’Care was officially launched.

It focuses on 3 areas:

  1. Knowledge for action: developing knowledge of the environmental footprint of digital technology.
  2. Supporting a more sober digital world: reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology.
  3. Innovation: using digital technology as a lever for the ecological transition.

The government’s strategy is in line with the actions taken by Syntec Numérique and its members, notably the desire to federate beyond the digital ecosystem and to change scale.

These two axes are at the heart of the raison d’être of Planet Tech’Care, an initiative led by Syntec Numérique. Launched 4 months ago, Planet Tech’Care continues to build on its momentum and pragmatic approach, with over 250 signatories to date – companies of all sizes and sectors, public bodies and schools – and already 5 workshops organized by one of the 16 partners, experts in the digital sector and its environmental footprint. A number of ambassadors have joined the scheme to help it spread throughout France and Europe.

This roadmap is also part of the action plan put in place by Syntec Numérique’s Digital and Environment Committee, so 2021 will be the year to measure the environmental impact of digital with the Green IT Alliance, to promote digital solutions in the service of the environment, and to set up a directory of responsible offers and solutions.

Join Planet Tech’Care now to take action together and make a bigger impact on the environmental footprint of digital technology, and take part in our monthly workshops. For more information: www.planet-techcare.green
