GLOBALIS media systems, a pioneer in PHP, perpetuates its know-how and technical lead through ongoing training.
The visionary choice of PHP, a committed member of the Open Source community
Founded in 1997 by Frédéric Hovart, SSII GLOBALIS designs and builds Internet, Intranet and mobile solutions (applications and sites). It also carries out studies, development, integration, assistance and TMA (…).
Globalis is unique in that it operates in a niche sector. It is, in fact, the only IT services company with a positioning entirely dedicated, and has been for 16 years, to the PHP / LAMP platform. It has been and still is a forerunner in this field. It has also played an active role in structuring the open source community in France, as a founding member and supporter of the first “PHP forum” and of the French PHP users’ association (AFUP). She is particularly involved in this community and regularly takes part in its major events: “Paris web”, “WordCamp”, etc.
The company now employs 29 people, working on a contract or fixed-price basis, and generated sales of over €2 million in 2012.
Ongoing training, a vital necessity
Investment in lifelong learning was prompted by the rapid pace of innovation in the IT sector. As a result, the initial training received by employees in higher education is rapidly becoming obsolete.
To remain competitive and at the cutting edge of technology, we need to train and learn constantly, regularly and on a daily basis. According to Frédéric Hovart, this even conditions the existence of the company itself.
A structured, structuring system
The remarkable arsenal put in place by Globalis is as follows:
- Initial training for all new arrivals, from 3 weeks to 2 months. Frédéric Hovart believes that higher education courses are too theoretical. In his view, we need to relearn the web and develop simple, effective solutions/projects.
- A “watch” time credit: The company makes one day per quarter available to its employees so that they can delve deeper into a subject of their choice.
- TheOpen book concept: every employee can obtain the books he or she wants
- Night sessions: each employee shares his or her knowledge and experience at a small internal conference.
- Active participation in major community conferences
The success of this system is based on the constant circulation of information, thanks in particular to the obligation placed on each employee to share his or her knowledge with colleagues through notes, reports, conferences (…). It also relies on the setting up of a corporate social network open to all employees, on an equal basis, and subdivided into major themes, thus enabling optimum sharing of knowledge.
Beneficiary’s opinion: Lionel Pointet, Project Manager at Globalis
“I joined Globalis straight from my engineering studies in 2009. My mission was to launch an offer in a field in which I had absolutely no mastery: performance auditing. Globalis trained me for 5 months on the subject, with special support from the technical director and the setting up of a watch on the subject.
I have since become Globalis’ “Performance Audit” referent and now regularly train my colleagues on the subject.
Despite the initial dizziness of the task, I felt empowered. I’d like to thank Globalis for trusting me and supporting me in this learning process.
Since he was hired in September 2009, Lionel Pointet has benefited from 160 days of technology watch or training, i.e. almost 8 months.
