SN BVA Barometer October 2014, civil liberties
Against a backdrop marked by NSA eavesdropping and the release of private celebrity data, many questions are currently being asked about the quality of personal data protection on the web. Syntec Numérique and BVA have taken stock of French people’s opinions on the protection of privacy on the Internet.
The French and their personal data on the web
- 70% believe that an independent authority, such as Cnil1, is the most effective way to protect the use of their personal data on the Internet.
- 57% are in favor of greater government control over what is broadcast on the Internet.
- Only 45% believe they are fairly well informed about the privacy risks of the Internet.
The independent public institution, a trusted player for the general public
A majority of the population considers that the protection of their personal data is more a matter for public service than private initiative.7 out of 10 French people trust an independent authority such as Cnil to carry out this mission, far ahead of private companies offering security systems on their sites (16%).
“These results clearly demonstrate the lack of credibility, but also the lack of education on the part of these private players, regarding their ability to self-regulate. The difficulty of enforcing the right to be forgotten with regard to certain data found on the Internet, or the scandals linked to leaks of personal data, whether voluntary or involuntary, have inevitably had an impact on public opinion”, we explain. Bruno Vanryb, President of the Publishers College, Syntec Numérique.
