Five questions about encryption, an indispensable technology

In light of the current security situation, the Cybersecurity Committee wanted to provide a simple explanation of what encryption is, why it exists and how it works. It has also provided a reminder of the existing legal framework and the stakes involved in encryption in a largely digitized world.

The Committee has formulated recommendations for companies, public authorities and the general public. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of encryption for all sectors of society. This calls for a sense of responsibility on everyone’s part, investment in the field, and strong, innovative R&D.

It is important that the security vision of States does not drift into an overabundance of laws and obligations, dissonant with one another, which would have the effect of weakening rather than strengthening cybersecurity.
