Although most French banks now offer a contactless payment function (NFC) on new bankcards, its use seems to be timid in France. Syntec Numérique, in partnership with the Odoxa1 polling institute, therefore decided to take stock of this innovation, which enables people to pay up to twenty euros without having to insert their card into a reader or enter a secret code. While the results are unequivocal, with the vast majority of the population considering this technological advance to be of little interest, communication and education of users seem to be key to the development of this market.

The French and contactless payment

  • 15% use this function
  • 19% indicate whether their card has this option
  • 34% find this technology useful

Most French people are uninterested in contactless payment and consider it useless

Nearly one in two French people (44%) are aware of their bankcard’s contactless payment function, but only 15% have ever used it, while twice as many (29%) have never used it even though they know they have this option. And one French person in five (19%) still doesn’t know if their card is contactless.
