Freelancers and freelance administration: ESNs adapt to the job market
Techtalks is the first installment in our series on the future of digital businesses, exploring the movement affecting freelance workers.
Digital companies, particularly ESNs, regularly see some of their teams leave to work independently. These freelancers remain close to their former employer’s business sector. Solutions are therefore available to keep these vital forces within their fold, thanks in particular to innovative “portage salarial” solutions. ESNs are adapting to this trend.
Portage salarial is becoming more and more popular, as it limits the risks for the company and gives the individual a degree of independence. In France, there are some 100,000 people working in the digital sector via “portage salarial” companies (EPS). On average, these companies generate sales of around 4.5 million euros.

Digital services companies increasingly work with a mix of employees, independent specialists and professionals operating through umbrella employment arrangements. The article examines how this diversity responds to project needs and evolving expectations in the labour market.
Different working relationships entail different responsibilities, protections and costs. Businesses should clarify supervision, intellectual-property ownership, confidentiality, insurance and contractual status before engaging an external specialist. The legal characteristics of umbrella employment and independent work require current, situation-specific review.
Work organisation is most effective when responsibilities are made explicit. Contracts and internal policies need to reflect the actual working relationship, not just a convenient label. Managers should consider workload, professional development, information security and how people can raise concerns. The balance between flexibility and protection will vary with each arrangement. For any employment-related publication written several years ago, readers should check the legislation, collective agreements and services currently available before taking action.
