This barometer is based on a panel of 559 companies and organizations surveyed, making it nationally representative in terms of respondents’ size, sales generated and sector of activity. 27 key indicators, divided into 8 major themes, were developed. The scope of the study is wide-ranging, from digital eco-design to WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) management, energy savings in data centers and printing.

Key findings:

– The Green IT strategies initiated by French companies revolve around 8 main themes: IT infrastructures, datacenters, printing, end-of-life, purchasing, governance, workstations and applications.

– IT infrastructures are subject to ever-increasing operating constraints, which explains the growing awareness of the need for new hardware. Printing remains a point of vigilance for companies, both for its associated costs,

– as well as its naturally low-impact nature (paper and toner consumption). Finally, waste management, thanks to dynamic European regulations, has led to the introduction of incentive schemes involving sorting and recycling actions within companies.

– Knowledge of the environment and available resources is improving, even if the vast majority of companies have a simple IT “room”, rarely displaying the level of resilience of a computer room or datacenter.

– Energy consumption in the digital sector and IT in the broadest sense remains a major issue for many IT managers. However, although energy efficiency is a significant area for improvement, still too few datacenter operators and companies have adequate measurement tools.

– On the purchasing side, nearly a third of companies surveyed said they use reconditioned or second-hand equipment for certain types of service. The average lifespan of terminals has increased by 170% over the last decade. Finally, the use of service providers from the social integration sector and adapted companies is still very marginal.

– Since the first edition of our barometer in 2015, Green IT has yet to conquer corporate governance. Less than a quarter of respondents have integrated Green IT into their strategy.

– Companies are increasingly interested in the eco-design of digital services. One company in 3 is involved in a digital eco-design initiative.
