The European Commission stresses that Europe has everything it takes to become a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence systems for safe uses and applications. Like its European neighbors, France boasts excellent research centers, a dynamic ecosystem and top-level skills.

In the White Paper on Artificial Intelligence presented yesterday, the Commission envisages a framework for trustworthy artificial intelligence. The aim is to provide a targeted, risk-based approach to applications or situations where new measures could complement the existing legislative framework.

Godefroy de Bentzmann, President of Syntec Numérique, emphasizes: “The dual approach, between support for innovation and confidence, is necessary to guarantee the conditions for the development of artificial intelligence in France and Europe. This means we need a stable regulatory framework so that companies can continue to innovate, and confidence in the technologies so that uses continue to diversify”.

According to the European Commission, Europe has all the resources it needs to become a major player in the new data economy; companies in all sectors are already taking steps to share their data. The European Data Strategy presented today aims to ensure that the European Union becomes a model and a major player in a society empowered by data. Regulatory sandboxes could encourage companies to experiment more with data sharing and partnerships between different structures.

Godefroy de Bentzmann points out that “. Supporting and accompanying the wider sharing and use of industrial data is therefore key for all economic sectors. But we also need to help companies, whatever their size or sector of activity, to become more mature about their data. This will require massive training to develop an overall vision of their information assets, before implementing global data governance. “.

The White Paper on Artificial Intelligence is currently out for public consultation until May 19, 2020, and the Commission is also gathering views on its data strategy.

Over the coming months, Syntec Numérique will continue to mobilize both in France and in Europe, and to work closely with the European Commission on these projects.

Implementing this ambitious strategy, and supporting the entire economy in its digital transformation, requires investment commensurate with the stakes. In view of the extraordinary summit on 20.02 devoted to the European Union’s budget, Syntec Numérique and 23 other professional organizations have senta letterto the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, calling for a European budget adapted to the digital age.

Godefroy de Bentzmann concludes “. Investment in skills is just as important as investment in technology. Together with our French and European counterparts, we have called on governments to significantly increase the share of the EU budget devoted to digital transformation, which is still insufficient today.  “
