An encouraging start to the year for employment in French Tech

French Tech continues its – good – momentum in terms of employment. After a positive end to the year 2023, French start-ups are still going strong at the beginning of the year. Every month has created new jobs, but April was the best month, with over 3,000 jobs created.

The 13,500 jobs created since January 2024, in the sample analyzed, represent a +4% increase in jobs in French Tech. While this trend is less significant than that observed in the first half of 2023 (+7.2%), the dynamic is more firmly rooted and regular.

Since January 2024, more than 8 out of 10 French start-ups have created (20%) or maintained (65%) jobs. At the same time, 15% have cut jobs.

Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: the regional locomotives of start-up employment

These two regions have combined to create nearly 8800 jobs since the start of the year, representing over 65% of the national total. In the first six months of the year, start-ups in the Paris region alone created almost 7,300 jobs, representing 54% of the total number of jobs created in 2024.

By way of comparison, the Île-de-France region created 58% of the national total in 2023 and 66% in 2022.

At the same time, the Auvergne-Rhône Alpes region has been enjoying strong growth over the past two years. With over 1,500 jobs created in the first six months, the region accounts for 11% of all new start-up jobs in France. That’s three points more than over the whole of 2023 and 2022.

More than two out of five jobs in French Tech come from GreenTech or industrial start-ups

GreenTech confirms its leading position in French start-up job creation. Over the first six months of the year, GreenTech start-ups created almost 2,800 jobs, or 21% of the national total. Industry start-ups are hot on the heels of GreenTech start-ups on a six-month cumulative basis. The latter have generated some 2,700 jobs since January, or 20% of the national total. The challenges of ecological transition and technological innovation are stimulating these sectors, offering promising employment opportunities for years to come. With over 1,600 jobs created in six months (12% of the total), TransportTech rounds off the podium. This performance confirms the boom in this sector, driven by innovation and new uses for mobility.

French Tech 120 start-ups have created more than 3,400 jobs

The start-ups in the “FrenchTech120” program, whose class of 2024 was announced at the last edition of VivaTech, created over 3,400 jobs in the first half of 2024. To date, FrenchTech 120 start-ups account for more than 58,000 jobs, according to their employees.

The resilience of French Tech and its ability to create jobs are extremely encouraging signs for the future. It demonstrates the dynamism and solidity of our French start-ups, and their crucial role as drivers of innovation and growth. This momentum is particularly visible in key sectors such as GreenTech and industry, perfectly illustrating French Tech’s ability to offer concrete, sustainable solutions.
