Wikimedia Hackathon
For an exceptional event organized by Wikimedia, the Commission des Femmes du Numérique had to promote the role of women twice!
More than 200 developers from 20 nationalities, were able to work on 5 themes proposed by Wikimedia, or Mediawiki rather, during 3 days of hackathon, which took place in Ecully from May 23 to 25, 2015, on the Valpré site, not far from Lyon.
Good afternoon everybody and thank you for being here today! I will continue in french ..
Hello everyone, and thank you and Wikimedia for coming to Lyon for this wonderful event! Thank you also for giving the Digital Women’s Commission another opportunity to speak out today.
Presentation
fabienne billat , fadouce sur twitter ../ Traditional then highly connected communications agency since 1998. Development of a web technology dedicated to magazines. Since then, I’ve been involved in training, digital communications, digital integration consulting and conferences.
More than 1 year ago, an incredible woman I met on Twitter, Viviane Chaine Ribeiro, CEO of Talentia Software, asked me to join the Commission des Femmes du Numérique, which she had set up within Syntec Numérique, the trade association for the digital professions. Véronique di Benedetto, CEO of Econocom, now chairs this commission. You can google them – you’ll be fascinated by their backgrounds!
To reinforce the point, women are present at all levels. But the digital sector is particularly welcoming to women in top management. There are twice as many women executives compared to the rest of the economy. 4 out of 10 executives in the digital sector are women, compared with 2 out of 10 in the general market (Hay Group and ACSEL barometer).
The actions of the CommissionFemmes du numérique
It’s worth noting that each member of this Commission holds a position in a company or group in the digital sector, so each is an excellent vector for dissemination.
We want to highlight theattractiveness ofdigital professions for women, and promoteequality betweenmen and women.
- the Trophée Excellencia, which rewards women with3prizes: the Entrepreneur Prize, the Student Prize, and the Association Prize.
- Opiiec study on the reasons why young women are not interested in the digital world

- And in the coming days, be prepared! THE Guide to best practices in favor of professional equality
Exactly. How was the Wikimedia hackathon in Amsterdam and Zurich?
….. “with more women” replies the organizer!
Ici, en France, now , why don’t you turn on your right … and then to your left .. what did you notice ?
If each of us turns his head towards his right-hand neighbor. Then to the neighbor on the left … There are very few women! Quotas exist, and one MEP declared that she “didn’t like quotas, but the effects they had”! Here, the desired minimum for the hackathon was 10% women present.
And yet, our functioning society is made up of men and women. Any organization, any field of activity, if it wants to develop, must be consistent with society. Transpose themselves.
In the digital sector, women account for 27.2% of the 46.5% female workforce => Still a very male-dominated sector.
Can we ignore a representative part of our society? The digital sector, which is still young and developing, is a fast-growing sector that contributed 5.5% of French GDP in 2014, more than the financial services sector. It’s a sector that’s recruiting, and we need to take advantage of it to avoid creating a ghetto, an essentially male world.
